The province of Cádiz has an extensive coastline, with innumerable high-quality beaches. Beaches that are highly appreciated and of great quality both in the purity of its waters and in the whiteness of its sands. In fact, it has been described as “The Caribbean of Europe”.

Cádiz Capital is bordered in its entirety by the sea, since it is made up of an isthmus and on the one hand we have the Atlantic Ocean and on the other the Bay of Cádiz.

In its municipal area, we find both urban and other more isolated beaches, with very limited construction, which are similar to unspoilt beaches.

This beach offers a panoramic view of the Cathedral of Cadiz, as well as being a meeting point for surfing enthusiasts, which does not mean that you can’t enjoy swimming

CATHEDRAL AND MIRADOR DE LA TORRE DE PONIENTE

The Cathedral of Cádiz “Santa Cruz sobre el mar” or Santa Cruz sobre las Aguas is also known by the people of Cadiz as the New, unlike the Old, which was built in the 16th century on the Gothic by Alfonso X El Sabio. The Gothic Cathedral underwent a series of reforms carried out in the 15th and 16th centuries until the Anglo-Dutch led by Admiral Howard and the Earl of Essex conquered and sacked Cádiz in 1596.

It is one of the emblematic buildings. It has a Latin cross plan and the baroque and neoclassical styles. The sound of the sea inside is overwhelming. From the Torre de Poniente of the Cathedral there are beautiful panoramic views of both the city and the Atlantic Ocean.

PUERTA TIERRA WALLS

Designed by the architect and academic Torcuato Cayón, it was part of an ambitious defensive plan against pirates and enemies of the crown, which covered the perimeter of the peninsula, which was made up of walls full of bastions and fortresses. Built with ashlars of oyster stone and masonry and has at both ends the semi-bastions of San Roque and Santa Elena.

In addition to the areas set aside for visits such as the central vault, the tower and the upper walkway, the Puerta Tierra Walls also house the rooms of the Lithographic Workshop Museum and the Ibero-American Puppet Museum.

SANTA CATALINA CASTLE

After the Anglo-Dutch sacking of the city in 1596, King Felipe II sent the engineer Cristóbal de Rojas to Cádiz for a defensive project. Rojas maintains that the immediate intervention would be to build a fort in Santa Catalina Bay, to protect in this way one of the most vulnerable fronts of the maritime border.

The castle represents an important example of military architecture in the modern era and has survived to this day without major changes. It has a star plan with two specific facades: one formed by triangular bastions located on the shore, and the other open to the city where the only gateway to the ring is located. It regulates the water level in the locks. The bridge leads to a simple gate, guarded by a watchtower at the top, below which is a plaque commemorating its completion in the reign of Philip II.

SAN SEBASTIAN CASTLE

The San Sebastián Castle, located on this small island, takes its name from a chapel built by the crew of a Venetian ship in 1457, who were allowed to stop there to treat the plague that afflicted the island. For the construction of this temple, the Venetians used the ruins of an old lighthouse, which in 1613 was replaced by a watchtower, which in addition to being a guide for sailors, also had a defensive function. The lighthouse was rebuilt in the 18th century and in 1908 it was replaced by the current structure.

To strengthen the site’s defences, a castle was built in 1706, accessible from drawbridges that surround the outer moat. The island is surrounded by a handrail, except for the southern region, where the slopes are enough.

ROMAN THEATRE

The Roman Theatre in Cádiz was built around 70 BC. when Lucio Cornelio “El Mayor” Balbo, a close friend and adviser of Julio César, along with his nephew Balbo “El Menor”, decided to expand the limits of the city, thus building the Necropolis. In this new area an amphitheatre and a theatre were built, later located in 1980 in the current district of El Pópulo.

The building was abandoned in the 3rd century AD It was plundered in the following century, although the remains of its imposing structure served as granaries, stables and dwellings until the Middle Ages. It also served as an Islamic fortress, cited in the sources of the time as the “Castle of the Theatre”, and later rebuilt by Alfonso X “the Wise” after the conquest of the city.

GRAN TEATRO FALLA

To speak of Gran Teatro Falla is to speak of the artistic and cultural panorama of Cádiz. From an architectural point of view, it is a neo-Mudejar style building, inside and out. At first glance, the colour of the red brick façade, the large windows with arched arches and the many details in the Spanish-Arabic style are very striking. The works began in 1885, on the ashes of the old Great Theatre, which was totally destroyed in a fire in 1881 and completed in 1905. Those responsible for the project are the architects Adolfo Morales de los Ríos and Adolfo del Castillo Escribano. The theatre opened on January 12, 1910 with a symphonic performance by Barbieri. Until 1926, the theatre was called Gran Teatro de Cádiz, but its name was changed to Gran Teatro Falla in honour of the famous Cadiz musician Manuel de Falla, an honorary citizen of the city.

At the Gran Teatro Falla, a variety of works related to the performing arts are presented throughout the year, including theatre, film, music and dance. However, its climax comes in February, when the theatre hosts the official contest of the COAC (Official Contest of Cadiz Carnival Groups), one of the most popular and important activities in the city, where groups of different carnival modalities express all their art through its verses.

CALETA BEACH

Finally, we must mention the most popular of all, La Caleta Beach. It is the smallest of all, since it is only 450 m long and is located in the heart of the old town, Specifically between the castles of Santa Catalina and San Sebastián.

It is a beach of great beauty and it should be noted that there is the spa of Nuestra Señora de la Palma and del Real, a historical building declared an Asset of Cultural Interest, now home to the Centre for Underwater Archaeology.
